Gardening Lessons For Kids

Learn how to garden! Students will learn what to grow and when, how to grow from seed to harvest, and about the life in the soil.

We will be offering in-person and virtual garden lessons for students K-12 for Spring 2026. Registration for each section includes 8 lessons (in-person or virtual) and materials for the lessons. Additionally, each student will receive their own 7 gallon grow bag filled with soil that will be theirs to keep at the end of the season.

For in-person and virtual lessons, our 3 class options are based on the student's grade level and experience:

1.) Sprouts Gardening Lessons

For students grades K-2, students will learn about growing plants from seed. Students will get their hands dirty as we explore each step of the plant's growth and how as gardeners, we help them have what they need to grow. We will also learn about harvesting and enjoying the bounty of the garden. Instruction will be age appropriate and encourage students to develop an understanding and a wonder for the world of plants. Parents will receive a handout after each lesson summarizing what the student learned that day.

2.) Introduction to Gardening Lessons

For students grades 3-12.  We start with the basics of gardening. We conduct experiments to demonstrate how the different forces in nature influence plants growth. Students will learn the basics of how gardeners help a plant have what it needs to grow, from seed to harvest. We will also dive into edible parts of plants and how to harvest what we grow. Students will receive weekly homework to further reinforce the lessons and engage them throughout the week. Parents will receive a handout after each lesson summarizing what the student learned that day.

3.) Intermediate Gardening Lessons

For students grades 3-12 who have completed our Introduction to Gardening Lessons. Students will be tending a dedicated section of our in-ground garden beds and learn about growing Spring crops from seed to harvest. There will be in-depth instruction about starting an in-ground garden including site preparation, soil testing, adding amendments, irrigation, and weed and pest control using organic methods. Parents will receive a handout after each lesson summarizing what the student learned that day.

**Students can utilize Step Up for Students funds to pay for the lessons. If you'd like to do that, please register through the links below AND on the Provider portion of EMA.**
